SCMA students have the opportunity to participate in a number of extracurricular activities on campus including media organizations that allow them to apply their coursework outside the classroom and gain valuable hands-on experience in their field of study. The SCMA student organizations produce news stories, publicity campaigns, magazines, and movies in addition to hosting events, taking field trips, and networking with industry professionals.

Film Club

Film Club aims to involve and engage students who have an interest in the production and critiquing of filmmaking through film screenings and open discussion.


Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) Chapter

The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) is the foremost organization for students interested in public relations and communications. PRSSA offers students professional development, networking opportunities, internship and job listings and news on the latest industry trends.


Pioneer Magazine

Pioneer Magazine is a student run bi-yearly publication. The student editors are responsible for every aspect of the magazine, including coming up with story ideas, finding writers, constructing layouts, and the final production of the magazine. Anyone interested in writing, editing, graphic design, public relations, or publication management should take the time to learn more about getting involved with Pioneer Magazine. It is a great way to get involved in the media world and is an impressive extracurricular activity to have when trying to find jobs.



WHRTV is a student-run TV production club designed to enhance students’ creativity and practice in television and sports production. This club is open to all students who express an interest in video production but particularly those majoring in communications and media studies. Members of this club create ideas for possible project and help with the execution of these concepts. Productions from the club can be found on display on the club’s YouTube channel and on the TVs in the Linda E. McMahon Commons as a way to market to and broadcast to the entire SHU community.

The Spectrum is a student-run weekly newspaper publication. Established in 1983, the Spectrum is one of two print publications on the Sacred Heart University campus. Members of this club have the opportunity to write pieces to be displayed upon the pages of the publication and on the publication’s website.

The Pulse

The Pulse is a student run production with three full-time student staff members serving as the executive producer, two student producers, along with students from TV News Magazine Production II class who produce weekly stories and columns, which we call, “Heart Beats.” The Pulse is a showcase for university and local community stories and images. It serves as a venue for quality programming packaged in a digital video format that is currently distributed across multiple platforms such as SHUBOX, The Open Student Television Network (a college only internet TV channel), the SHU website, iTunesU and its very own “Pulse” website. The Pulse is a video news magazine that will engage Sacred Heart University students, faculty and staff, and serve as a shining example of our student’s creative skills and talents for those outside the SHU community. 91.5 WHRT is open to all students to learn basic radio production skills and techniques. From hosting music shows, sports shows, talk shows and broadcasting school events, WHRT provides a diverse experience in various aspects of radio broadcasting.


Lambda Pi Eta

Lambda Pi Eta is the official Communication Honor Society of the National Communication Association. As an accredited member of the Association of College Honor Societies, Lambda Pi Eta has 600 active chapters at colleges and universities worldwide. SHU is home to the Alpha Delta Zeta chapter, which received its charter in 2015. Membership is by invitation only.
