Vision & Mission

The School of Communication, Media & the Arts, as part of the College of Arts & Sciences, aspires to be known as a community of internationally recognized faculty scholars and mentors, accomplished students, and academic programs known for distinctiveness and excellence. We strive to demonstrate the value of the liberal arts in contemporary society through a value-based curriculum that develops strong leaders and contributors to the local, national, and global communities.

The SCMA Difference

What differentiates SCMA from other Media schools is simple – the students, the faculty, and the facilities.

  • Our students are committed, creative team players. They are eager to learn and get involved and make a difference both on and off campus.
  • Our faculty not only have extensive knowledge in their fields of study but also real-life industry experience that they bring to the classroom. They are dedicated to educating the entire person and are easily accessible for meetings and extra help.
  • Our facilities include three production studios, including control rooms, a media theater and lecture forum and screening classrooms, all with state-of-the-art equipment.

Receiving my masters from Sacred Heart University’s School of Communication, Media & the Arts jumpstarted my career in media. Being able to work with state-of-the-art equipment in the on-campus studios under the guidance of professors who have had lifelong careers in the media industry prepared me for my current position as an associate digital video producer at NBC News. I’m a lucky millennial to say that I have been successfully working in my career since graduation. I attribute my comfort and confidence in the news room to my experience earning my master’s degree from Sacred Heart University.

Faculty

Students will be taught by established media scholars and industry professionals as they move through a curriculum that will be grounded in traditional courses and complemented by intensive workshops offered by media practitioners each semester. Our core faculty features instructors with extensive experience from their work.

Facilities

Outfitted with up-to-date multimedia production software and equipment, SCMA’s facilities support SHU students, faculty, and the university as a whole, serving all academic and athletic departments. Equally important, the Martire Center for the Liberal Arts has developed partnerships with outside production companies to develop opportunities for current and former students.

Internships

Not only do students gain valuable experience but they receive academic credit for their internship learning experiences. In addition to completing internships at top corporate media outlets, some students choose to focus on community outreach and teacher training opportunities depending on their career goals and personal interests.

Location

With the increase of media industry outlets in Connecticut, SCMA is the home of the next generation of film, television, and communications professionals. The close proximity to New York and Boston in the heart of the communication industry offers an array of internships and career opportunities. Getting early exposure to the workplace, and the chance to network and form professional relationships, in the Tri-State area and elsewhere, is part of what makes an SCMA degree so valuable.
